A Little Dirt Don’t Hurt

Good morning!

Yesterday we went on our first field trip. A walking field trip. We walked across the street to the Kendall-Whittier G.R.O.W. garden. There we spent over an hour with Mr David learning about soil and plants. He won the attention and the hearts of my entire class within minutes with his passion and enthusiasm.

We sampled tomatillos, poblano peppers, home grown tomatoes, green beans, okra, onions, fresh basil, lemon grass, spearmint, peppermint, stevia, sun in stars watermelon for dessert,

and a few things I’d never seen nor heard of before. We saw flowers and butterflies.

We saw a compost pile, we stuck our hands in soil, we picked fresh food, and Mr. David cut it and we ate it.  And we didn’t even wash it off.

A little dirt. A little dirt don’t hurt.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, getting back to nature, playing in the dirt.

When’s the last time you picked your own produce from the dirt, and ate it?

It’s quite therapeutic! Not to mention delicious! It calmed the best of my ADHD students. It engaged the lowest of my low. Everyone participated. They picked. They tasted. And they played in the dirt.

Let’s all step back in time. Turn off our technology.  Our phones and our computers. Instead let’s turn on to mother nature. Enjoy just working the land. And playing in the dirt.

He who tills his land will have plenty of food, but he who follows empty pursuits will have poverty in plenty.    Proverbs 28:19

Love and laughter,
