I got up on Saturday, the last day of the year, and decided to respond to an email I’d received earlier that morning. It was entitled ‘Tis Better To Give.
To give blood. After all it was the last day of the year, why not end it in style? By giving back. By giving something of myself. By donating my blood.
I work at a hospital. I handle units of blood most every night I work. I’ve had family members receive blood transfusions. I get the importance of blood.
I have donated blood many times throughout my life time. The past decade I hadn’t weighed enough to donate most of the time, but you can bet your holiday baked goods that this girl is weighing in over the minimum weight limit right now. Santa was not the only jolly old elf with a round little belly that shook when he laughed lke a bowl full of jelly over this holiday season. 🙂
Why not use my unfortunate temporary (and I do mean temporary) condition to my advantage? Fat and happy Sandy, thanks to all the homemade Christmas goodies from the school and hospital over the holidays, is going to soon be a thing of the past. No more sweets! A new year’s resolution.
So I drove on over. Grabbed a bottle of water from their nutrition center to hydrate before I gave blood, and a warm, freshly bsked Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookie. Yum! The new year’s resolutions hadn’t begun yet! 😉
I was given a small stress ball to periodically squeeze to keep the circulation flowing as the process took place. I laughed and thought to myself as I grasped it, “I’ve got the world in my hands. Not a bad way to end the year.”
And that’s exactly how I felt. It wasn’t a bad year after all. It’d had its ups and downs, but overall it ended on a really good note. Healthy vision. A great Christmas. Santa had been more than generous to me. ♡ My girls all together. And in return I ended my year by giving back. I gave my blood.
Let’s never forget the one that gave His blood for us. All of it. Not just a bag of it. Jesus gave His all for us. Let’s give back to Him. After all, Oklahoma Blood Institute couldn’t have said it any better, ‘Tis better to give.
And who doesn’t love a cheerful giver? 🙂
I pray each of you has given your life to Jesus. If not, 2017 offers a fresh start. What a perfect time! After all, Jesus gave His life for you. And me. And just in case you didn’t notice, He’s got the whole world in His hands! 🙂
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
