I am in the process of having a tree taken down from my backyard. It is a very big tree. A very old tree. The house has sat on the lot over 50 years, and the tree came with the lot.
The roots of the tree have spread beneath the brick wall dividing the front and back yard and have caused the wall to crack. Become unstable. The tree has become unstable as well. Diseased. Although it’s still growing and producing hearty leaves each year, parts of it are dead, rotted, and decayed. Every time it storms, one of its diseased branches comes down. A piece at a time. So far.
We live across the street from an elementary school. My biggest fear is someday a limb falling unexpectedly and injuring a child or a vehicle.
School was starting soon. It was time. To remove the perilous limb that reached over the fence before cars and children were once again in danger.
I have delayed making the decision to take out the tree for two reasons. Primarily the expense. It’s not cheap! And because I just hate to kill, remove a living thing. Something so old and majestic in its size. Oh the stories it could tell of the fun had in that backyard it watched over all this many years! The burds, the squirrels that played in its branches.♡
When you really think about it that old tree is like many of us. We look fine for the most part on the outside. Growing. Seemingly productive. Participating in life. But on the inside we are slowly rotting. The fungus of sin is taking over and decaying our mere foundations.
Let’s not be like that old tree! Let’s be cured of the disease in our very cores. Our souls. Let’s let Jesus into our hearts to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. He is our tree of life. Let’s live so we can experience the tree of life. Eat from it and live forever. With our creator. Be the people God intended us to be. Be living on the inside as well as the outside.
Thank you to Clay for my tree removal. 🙂 If you ever have a tree you need removed, let me know. I can offer you some advice. 🙂 I can now add that to my repertoire of things I’ve done. Not personally removed. Only watched. Although I kinda wanted to climb up there with my butter knife (power saw if you watch Building Alaska) and give it a try!
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever” therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:22-24
