As you know, I am working nights the month of July. Therefore I am sleeping days.
I was in a sound sleep last week when I was abruptly awoken by the sound of sirens. Very loud sirens. And dogs howling at them. It was about halfway through my sleep cycle so it took me a moment to gather my senses. I realized it was not my alarm, but the tornado siren outside my window. I looked out the window saw no wind or rain, said a little prayer for protection, and opted to finish my rest. After all, I did have to go to work that evening. No tornado. No loss of power. All was well.
Yesterday I was once again sleeping soundly when I was abruptly awoken by a man’s voice yelling “Fire Department! ” I thought I was dreaming. But I got up and checked for smoke or flames. I saw or smelled no signs of fire. I went downstairs to find the man behind the voice in my entryway. It wasn’t a dream. He asked me if I called them. I told him “No, I was sleeping.” He told me someone did. He opened my front door and there were half a dozen firemen standing outside my door.
They asked me to put my dogs up and told me the call was from someone who had fallen. My dad!!! We rushed to his room in the back of the house downstairs. He had fallen out of bed and was lying on the floor on his back beside his bed. Thank God he was conscious. He had his phone, but was unable to lift his head or arms to see it to accurately dial a series of numbers. He had been there for hours and finally managed to reach 911. All the while I was peacefully sleeping
There was a missed call from my dad at 1:49 p.m.on my phone. On my phone that was silenced from work the night before. The phone that lie on my nightstand letting me peacefully rest upstairs. I have never felt so terrible! 😦
Abrupt awakenings. They jolt you from your peaceful slumber. They catch you by surprise. I can’t say that I like them. I’d much prefer spiritual awakenings. The kind that jolt you into adjusting your priorities. Putting God first. Turning from poor choices. To the right ones.
Let’s all reach out to our hurting world. Let’s bring forth a spiritual awakening. To love not hate. To peace not war.To eternity not death. It’s time. Otherwise like me, we may just sleep through that which is crucial we be awake for!
Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone, and the day is near Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Romans 13:11-12
