One of my favorite summer flowers is the Hibiscus.
It does not grow native to Oklahoma. But you can find it potted with the tropicals.
I remember going to Mexico for Easter vacation as a youth with my parents and finding fresh hibiscus floating on our private pool outside our patio each morning. I recall thinking that’s how famous people must live. 🙂
Ever since then I have loved them. They take me away. On a vacation. To the sea. The ocean. The beach. Cool ocean breezes. Warm sunshine on my skin. Splashing playfully in the water. Sand between my toes. I’ve enjoyed them over the years many times over growing outdoors on many tropical vacations. Hawaii. St John. Grand Cayman. Some of my favorites.
I am no longer at a place in my life to afford the luxury of tropical beaches, but I can go there in my mind. With a simple trigger like a hibiscus.
I went to Wal-Mart yesterday afternoon to pick up prescription refills for my father. And while I was at it, I picked up my annual hibiscus plant. For my front porch. For $12.50.
Best $12.50 I ever spent. Cheaper thsn a plane ticket. 🙂 For $12.50 I was on a beach. Or so I could dream. For $12.50 I was in my happy place.
How about you?
What triggers your happy place for you?
I have other triggers of happy places. I hope you do too. Special days when they roll around on the calendar. The smell of chocolate chip cookies baking. The lingering aroma of my mother’s perfume. The laughter of small children. A certain someone’s voice on the other end of the phone. Watching a horse gallup freely. A rainbow in the sky.
Yesterday it was a hibiscus for $12.50 that took me to my happy place. For the summer. ‘Til the first freeze hits and destroys it.
Yesterday. Today. And tomorrow it is a rainbow. God’s very own sign of His covenant between Him and us. The magnificence of a rainbow with its spectrum of colors placed in the sky for all to see. Reminding us He will never destroy us again. His arms. His love. His Son. That is our happy place.:)
Let’s all find our true happy place. Temporary ones are nice. But they don’t hold a candle to Jesus. Let Him not only be your trigger, but your eternal happy place to escape.
I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.
Love and laughter,
