Did you know that the two words Listen and Silent have the same letters yet have dramatically different meanings when it comes to our ears? When something is silent, it is not making a sound. To listen is to hear a sound.
We hear with an ear.
Two ears. One mouth.
Maybe we should all listen more. Talk less.
Ears were made to hear. To listen.
Do you listen to hear or do you listen to respond?
I’m afraid I’m guilty of the latter all too often. 😦
I’m a talker more than a listener.
I’m going to make a conscious effort to change that.
You learn nothing by talking. Only by listening.
Let’s all be better listeners. Let’s hear the voice of God all around us. In nature. In the wisdom of others as they share their counsel and experiences. In the cries of the lost, the lonely, and the broken. In the joy and laughter of the innocent as children frolic.
But on the same note, let’s not be silent. Let’s not turn a deaf ear to the wrongs of this world. The abuse. The injustice. The hate.
We can speak up with our voices, but better yet, let’s reach out with our prayers. A silent prayer on bended knee is worth a thousand words. Tell God today of your concerns. He hears you. He msy be silent, but He’s always listening.
A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
